This striking trifoliate species bears large heavily textured leaflets to 15 inches in length. The sinister and intriguing black-purple spathe reveals white translucent lines in its throat, and a long, wiry spadix to 2 feet in length. An astonishment. Plant in groups of three.

A whorled-leaved species from the high reaches of Emei Shan in Sichuan Province, with elegant narrow leaflets on ciliate stems to 2.5 ft. and a white and purple-striped spathe over "Jack" produced slightly below. As is usual for the jacks, thrives in shaded gardens with organically-rich, moist -- but well-drained -- soils.

A tall and robust species found in Japan and Northeast China. When mature, it often reaches more than 4 feet in height. The stems rise from the ground in very early spring, topped by a whorl of wide and long leaflets, mottled in white. Hooded spathes follow 5 inches tall, they vary in color from dark green to the deepest purple with creamy white stripes. This species comes to us from Northern Japan. Its natural habitat are moist conditions in partial shade and cool, humus-rich soil.

Mixed accessions from the Western Hills above Kunming in Yunnan Province, this population had many divided leaflets with long drip tips (variable length among seedlings) atop stems to 3 ft., though in our woodland, our mature plants rise to nearly 6 ft. in height. The purplish striped flower arises from the leaf petiole just under the foliage, with a short, green spadix and a pendulous spathe with a long, acuminate tip.
