This selection of the native North American swamp milkweed is just a bit tamed, its gently vanilla-scented, slightly crowned flower clusters a deeper rosy pink, and its habit a bit more compact than the species. Nonetheless, even in its wild form it is a great summer-bloomer that is perfect for attracting butterflies (and their larvae), and actually is easily adapted to heavy soils that are less moist than its common name would imply. As a cut flower they are long lasting, and even the slender milkweed pods that follow in September can be added to dried arrangements. Long used in herbal remedies, the milky-sapped genus is named for Asclepios, the Greek god of medicine. Deer resistant.
