Dark green leaves along black-purple sturdy stems to 2.5 ft. are in superb contrast to the clean white flowers in late summer. I have grown this since our arrival at Heronswood and would not be without it in the garden. A very good selection for, as usual, full sun.
Aster novi-belgii 'Porzellan' $12.95
English Aster
A exceptional, unusually colored plant deserving of wider recognition. Compact and dense, at only 36 inches, with fall flowers of intense silvery lavender on strong upright, greenish-bronze stems. Memorable alone or when paired with Cyrptomeria japonica.
Aster novae-angliae 'Lachsglut' $11.95
New England Aster
Discovered in Germany in 1996, this tall robust selection irradiates the garden with crisp and startling hot pink 2-inch flowers atop sturdy 4 foot stems. In July we cut this down to half-size to delay flowering as well as to fortify its framework. A remarkably dramatic Aster.
Frilly, cupped, rich medium-lavender flowers, the most substantial of our Aster offerings, with resonant golden centers, on 40" stems in mid- to late autumn. This blossoms adjacent to to the brilliant red autumn color of Viburnum opulus æNanumÆ in the mixed border adjacent to our nursery. A smashing combination
An aster with a bushy, compact habit. Bears daisies of such a light pink that they appear white in late summer to fall. Thrives in slightly moist, organically-enriched soil and full to part sun. Aster flowering and compactness is improved if the plants are pinched back in late spring to early summer.
A Germanic cultivar of the Italian Aster, this low-growing, clumping species offers substantial 2-inch flowers of periwinkle blue with a yellow eye. This species is rarely encountered in American horticulture and merits wider use, especially for front to mid-border positions in full sun. Thrives in alkaline soil.
