This rare and exceptional cultivar emerged from our wild seed collections in China. It exhibits lustrous deep red-burgundy foliage in spring before fading to greenish-purple in summer. Terminal clusters of creamy bell-shaped flowers appear atop stunning 6-foot stems in early summer, resulting in crops of glistening black-purple fruit. The overall appearance is of a handsomely striking, well-mannered bamboo. Shade to part shade in evenly moist soil.

Disporum
A beautiful species from Emei Shan in the Yangzi region of China, with branched stems rising to 5 feet in height, carrying elegantly drooping, creamy bells in spring, followed by striking crops of blue-black fruit. We discovered it at 2500-3000 feet, growing amongst Aucuba omeiensis, Mahonia gracilipes and Mahonia confusa. Though it is likely semi-evergreen in warmer climates, this grouping thrives in our woodland where it acts totally deciduous. A year-round favorite of our visitors.
