Undoubtedly our most striking hybrid. Unusually clean, raspberry-mauve flowers are fully double, creating nodding heads of mum-like fullness atop 2-foot stems. Lift a bloom to see deep into the center. See where it glows with a touch of lime radiating into a smoky plum grape. A vigorous hybrid, effective in small groups as well as large sweeps in both part and full shade.
Vancouveria hexandra $14.95
Vancouveria
A close relative of the Epimedium, with similar shooting star flowers in baby's breathe white held in airy sprays above shiny, light green duck-footed leaves. Reflexed petals make flowers look like they've turned inside-out. Although considered deciduous, we've seen it remain evergreen in a protected eastern nook in the garden, where it snuggles up against the golden Dicentra spectabilis and slowly creeps around and amongst Tiarella Running Tapestry.
One of the standout plants in our shade garden, ęPainterĘs PaletteĘ features dazzling splashes of color on each leaf, with dark and light green, yellow, white and rosy pink punctuated by darker red midribs and stalks. A magnificent and sophisticated choice that brings any shaded spot to light.
In autumn the pretty, apetalous white spikes of flowers on tall stems result in startling powdery blue fruit that resemble airborne bunches of grapes. This Asiatic species, the counterpart to our Carolina and Tennessee native blue cohosh, has striking bi-pinnate foliage formed on branched petioles. The beauty of this little known charmer never fails to attract admiring attention.
Arisaema speciosum var. magnificum $24.95
Jack-in-the-Pulpit
A magnificently larger form of the species, with bronze stems mottled and speckled with luminous lime green, and large palmate leaves. Widely hooded spathes are a rich wine with narrow white stripes. Moist, well drained soil in light shade.
We integrated the wide range of colors from our experimental breeding program into exquisite double flowered forms. These rare blooms display a full doubling of petals on robust, ready to bloom plants. All are one-of-a-kind.
