In Japan this hellebore is known for its soft blushed-pink flowers, reminiscent of cherished cherry-blossom trees. We, too, can appreciate this allusion to the fresh, delicate colors of the flowering cherries and apple trees in spring, but on this hellebore each blossom is much larger and they appear much earlier in the season. The plants are vigorous and the flowers abundant.
Each bloomĘs large, flattened petals overlap to create a smooth canvas on which to highlight a bold center star. Brushed outward from the center, full strokes of rich burgundy come to a perfect point, then radiate into thin veins of color until reaching the petalsĘ edges. Slightly upturned flowers appear in groups above leathery, evergreen foliage. Plant en masse in the shaded garden.
Peer closely at the delicate blooms of our recent addition to the Heronswood hellebore family; the petal structure is more reminiscent of a delicate Dendrobium orchid than a hellebore. A rare beauty, each petal is carefully edged in royal purple, with delicate wire-thin veining throughout the creamy white blossoms. An extravagant and rare choice.
Helleborus 'Phoenix' $19.95
Lenten Rose
We were astonished when we first discovered the blooms on this gorgeous single-flowered selection. Each petal, perfectly shaped and a soothing shade of Granny Smith apple green, is edged in blazing rosy red. In late winter, the flowers emerge from the barren ground to provide a prelude to spring. Extraordinary and unlike any other flower in the garden.
Helleborus 'Ivory Prince' $14.95
Lenten Rose
From breeder David Tristram comes this beautiful hellebore, selected for its vigor and superior compact upright habit. Beginning in late winter, the rich burgundy pink buds open to reveal outward facing, flattened ivory blossoms. The petals are quickly streaked with rose, then an overlay of chartreuse as they age. At each stage they stand out against the handsome blue-green foliage, making for an effective display in groupings or as a specimen.
Almost perfectly round, these cupped blossoms resemble the blushed cheeks of a prized china doll. Delicate in appearance but tough as nails in the garden, it lasted rigorous selections to cull the weak traits out of either parent. The result is a delicate beauty that will reward you with years of garden performance.
