The pretty ruffled, upturned petals of burgundy-rose crepe contrast with that classic poppy ôblack eyeö. They bloom not just once in late spring, but return for a second show in September. Even the foliage remains fresh into the summer, not something most poppies can brag about. Like most poppies, deer and rabbits avoid it. Grows rather well in average, well-drained even dry soils.
This exquisite selection is probably the most sought after Oriental Poppy, and for good reason. The numerous 6-inch wide, ruffled plum-purple flowers display dazzling central blotches in shades of blackberry jelly, later fading to lavender-gray. For the mid-border, in full sun and well-drained soil.
With the texture of crumpled velvet and rich color of a Clementine tangerine, this selection should star in this yearÆs fashion shows. Blooming over a long period above dusky gray-green foliage, it stands out just fine on its own. Provide with full sun and well-drained soil.
Papaver orientale 'Aglaja' $18.95
Oriental Poppy
A sensational yet rare Oriental Poppy. The long-lasting, ruffled, salmon pink flowers have distinctive rich red basal markings on each petal. Blooms proliferate on extremely sturdy, upright stems to 2 feet. Best in full sun and well-drained soil. As with all the Orientals, combine with late blooming border companions that mask the poppy foliage as it rests in mid-season.
"The large, frilly white overlapping petals are picotee-edged in hot pinkish-red. For some this Oriental Poppy evokes the Moulin Rouge dancing girls of Paris for which this is named. One of the best, its gleaming blooms are borne on numerous strong, stout stems that withstand storms. These make exceptionally long-lasting cut flowers. A long-lived perennial, grown easily in any soil that is well-drained. "
This youngest sister of the beloved æPattyÆs PlumÆ bears huge lavender-streaked plum-color flowers whose petals are doubled, fringed, and twisted. Since the blossoms are strongly held on thick stems, rain and wind will not ruffle this PattyÆs constitution. Tolerant of drought and resists browsing deer and nibbling rabbits.
