A fine rose little known outside of rosarian circles. Rose scholars prize its heady fragrance and continuous bloom. Shrubby, vigorous, its arching reddish canes are clad in handsome, yellow-green foliage. Then arrives the long offering of sweetly scented white flowers opening from yellow buds, followed by tiny red hips, which are, in turn, followed by a bumper crop of reddish-orange hips. This hardy plant is vigorous, disease-resistant, and tolerant of a shaded location. All it asks are a few hours of sunlight each day.
Each summer this titan and regal beauty upstages everything else, when its upright arching 18-foot canes cascade with brilliant single red flowers. Vigorous, sturdy and disease resistant. For gardens that can accommodate impressive size, there is no more dramatic rose to be had. Simply provide full sun and any draining soil.
Helleborus 'Phoebe' $19.95
Lenten Rose
Bright pink flowers are fully double, creating frilly heads reminiscent of peonies, but for the wintertime garden. Each petal is softly dusted with freckles twisting and tucking itself into the full, almost spherical flower head. We labored over developing this delectable pink double with a substantial plant habit and strong resistance to diseases.
We integrated the wide color palette from our experimental hellebore breeding program into exquisite single flowered forms. These rare blooms display petals on robust, ready-to-bloom plants. All are one-of-a-kind hellebore varieties.
Almost perfectly round, these cupped blossoms resemble the blushed cheeks of a prized china doll. Delicate in appearance but tough as nails in the garden, it lasted rigorous selections to cull the weak traits out of either parent. The result is a delicate beauty that will reward you with years of garden performance.
Undoubtedly our most striking hybrid. Unusually clean, raspberry-mauve flowers are fully double, creating nodding heads of mum-like fullness atop 2-foot stems. Lift a bloom to see deep into the center. See where it glows with a touch of lime radiating into a smoky plum grape. A vigorous hybrid, effective in small groups as well as large sweeps in both part and full shade.
