The new growth of this hydrangea is a rich burgundy throughout the season. Come midsummer, from buds opening ruby red, discs of pink, fertile flowers are surrounded by pinkish-white sterile florets picoteed in rose-red. An outstanding cultivar from Japan.
Certainly one of the most striking Hydrangeas that we currently have in our collection in regard to flowers. We originally received this from Japan as æBeni NishikiÆ which translates literally as 'Red Variegated.' Though the variegation was unstable and quickly disappeared, the deep red lacecap flowers are amongst the most intensely saturated of any Hydrangea cultivar we have observed. Ultimately to 4 ft., in partial shade or full sun in humus-rich, acidic soil.
In the nursery weÆve been very pleased with the autumn tints of red in the small foliage of this summer-blossoming hydrangea. Both foliage and flower-heads are small; produces lovely heads of double sterile flowers, pink to white in the alkaline soil of our pots, and blue in the acid soil of the garden. To 4 ft.
(Translation: Red edged.) Deep green serrate foliage and delightful reddish pink lacecap flowers darkening to red with a blue rinse as they age, turning 180 degrees in the process. Compact to 5 ft., among the most beautiful of the many Hydrangeas we cultivate in our woodland, and certainly the favorite of visitors to the garden.
An excellent cultivar that we brought home many years ago from Washfield Nursery in Kent. Lovely, light blue lacecaps atop compact and dense stems, to 4 ft. x 4 ft., later picking up tints of pinkish red throughout the flower heads. One of the few dwarf lacecap hydrangeas available. Superb. 4.5 ft.
A new and rarely offered hydrangea from Japan known for its inky black flowers (certainly 'intensified' in photographs in Japanese horticultural publications). The heads of flowers of this hydrangea are relatively small though for those with further breeding in mind, this new departure in flower color will offer plenty of inspiration. Full sun or light shade in any draining, acidic soil.
